Happy Camper!

Hello Coffee fans,

We love spring time here at Sláinte Coffee because we know that camping season is just around the corner! Even when we are out in the sticks enjoying those mornings in nature, we still enjoy our fresh and delicious cup (or cups!) of coffee. As you might have seen on Instagram (@slaintecoffee) or Facebook (@slaintecoffee) we always bring fresh coffee to fuel our adventures. Devon’s parents introduced him to camp coffee using a percolator with lots of milk and sugar. While that was yummy as a ten year old, our coffee preferences have changed over the years. Here's all the info and tips needed to brew your perfect wilderness coffee!

Sláinte Coffee’s Wilderness Coffee Guide

For our camping trips we have some well refined recipes, as we have practiced them many times! Devon is often the one waking the group by freshly grinding Ethiopia Yirgacheffe beans (these are our favorite as a light roast) in our manual Hario Ceramic Burr Grinder. This is a great little grinder that we often use when we travel as well. The grind can be adjusted using your handy multitool.

If we want to brew a single cup of coffee, we use either this Aeropress or Simpresso. If more coffee is needed for a larger group, we go with the French press. Below is a recipe for each:

Aeropress Recipe

22 grams of whole bean Sláinte Coffee or 2 scoops from the scooper provided with the Aeropress

9 oz of water from your water supply or filtered from the lake/stream

Fetch some water out of the lake or stream and filter. Adjust grind to make grounds look like fine sand and finish grinding coffee. While grinding, bring the water to a boil. We use a JetBoil for our water, its quick and efficient. Place plunger into Aeropress and invert. Pour coffee grounds in aeropress. Once water is boiling pour about ¼ of the water in over the grounds and let sit for 30 seconds to let it bloom. After 30 seconds, stir mixture and fill the container to the top with water. Time for 4:30. When that time is complete, stir again and place filter and cover on Aeropress invert over your cup and press slowly into cup over 30 seconds. Enjoy and repeat until jovial mood attained.

French Press Recipe

64 grams of whole bean Sláinte Coffee or a 2 fists full of coffee (handy measurement term often used in the wild)

32 oz of water either from your water supply or through your water filter from the lake/stream

Scoop some water out of the lake or stream and filter. Adjust grind to make grounds look like coarse sand and finish grinding coffee. While grinding, bring the water to a boil using your Jetboil or the like. Pour coffee grounds in French press. Once water is boiling pour about ¼ of the water in over the grounds and let sit for 30 seconds to let it bloom. After 30 seconds, stir mixture and fill the container to the top with water. Time for 4:30. When that time is complete, stir again and place press into container and slowly depress handle. Tastes best in tin camp cups. Enjoy and repeat as needed.
